The term is well and truly underway, and it has been fantastic to see our scholars approaching school life with such enthusiasm and positivity. 

I have been particularly pleased to see Year 11 so focused on their studies and making the most of their Period 6 lessons. Their commitment and determination are encouraging as they work towards their examinations. 

It is also wonderful to see so many scholars taking part in enrichment activities across our wide variety of clubs! These opportunities help young people discover new interests, develop their talents and build friendships. 

Our value of the term, Citizenship, has been an important focus this week as we continue to make the implicit explicit: helping scholars understand not only what we value, but why it matters. In Monday’s assembly, we explored community and compromise, reflecting on how listening to others, respecting different perspectives and working together help us all contribute positively to school life.

Next week, we look forward to Languages Week - an opportunity to celebrate languages and cultures, spark curiosity and recognise the value of connecting with others.

Homework 

At this point in the term all students have homework set. 

We value homework because research shows that effective homework can improve the academic progress of 11–16-year-olds by up to five months (Education Endowment Foundation).

Throughout their five years at MEA Central, students are explicitly taught during form time and class time how to use retrieval practice techniques and knowledge organisers so that they can confidently recall and apply essential knowledge over time.

This knowledge is then tested in class and used to inform teaching and planning for the next phase of learning. By Year 11, we aim for every student to have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be self-regulated scholars who can study effectively and independently.

In a recent review of red homework books, we saw an excellent example of retrieval practice from Year 7.  

Homework club runs every day after school where your child can access a computer and support.  

If your child is struggling with keeping up with their homework, please contact the class teacher in the first instance who will be happy to support.

Head of Year Messages  

Year 7 – Mr Guest 

I would like to begin by saying how incredibly proud we are of our Year 7 students. Overall, scholars have been fantastic, particularly during lessons. Their attitude to learning, willingness to participate, and commitment to improving each day have been a real credit to themselves and to MEA Central. 

 

I would also like to thank all parents and carers who attended our recent Welcome Evening. It was a lovely opportunity to meet so many families and begin building strong relationships for the year ahead. We greatly appreciate your engagement and support, and it was wonderful to see so many of you there. 

 

This half-term, our focus is citizenship. We are encouraging all scholars to think carefully about the impact they have on those around them and to contribute positively to our school community. A key part of this is using kind words, showing respect to others, and helping everyone feel that they belong at MEA Central. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference, and it has been pleasing to see so many students demonstrating these values each day. 

 

Excellent attendance remains one of the biggest factors in academic success. Every lesson matters, and every day in school provides valuable learning opportunities. We ask all families to support us in ensuring that scholars arrive at school on time each day. Students should be through the gates by 8:40am, although I strongly recommend arriving by 8:30am to allow time to settle, socialise with friends and begin the day positively. A calm and punctual start helps students to be ready to learn from the very first lesson. 

 

Over the past week, scholars have been completing their benchmark assessments. I have been extremely impressed with the maturity, resilience and effort shown throughout the testing period. Students have approached these assessments with a positive attitude and should be proud of how they have conducted themselves. They have represented Year 7 brilliantly and we look forward to celebrating their progress. 

 

We are continuing our push on enrichment and encouraging every scholar to become fully involved in school life beyond the classroom. Our goal is for every scholar to participate in at least two enrichment clubs or activities. Whether this is sport, music, drama, art, STEM, or another area of interest, enrichment helps students develop confidence, build friendships, and discover new talents. Please take some time to discuss the available opportunities with your child and encourage them to get involved. 

 

Finally, I would like to thank all our Year 7 scholars for the positive attitude they have shown this week. The maturity, enthusiasm and determination displayed by so many students reflects the high standards we expect at MEA Central. We look forward to seeing this continue in the weeks ahead.

Year 8 – Ms Park 

Dear Year 8 Students and Families, 

I hope you have had a wonderful start to the week. As we continue to settle into the autumn term, I would like to take the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic start Year 8 has made. Last week was an excellent second week back, and staff were incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm, focus and positive attitude displayed by students across the year group. It has been great to see so many students returning with a positive mindset and a determination to succeed. 

 

Uniform standards have been strong overall, and I would like to thank families for supporting our expectations. This week, we will be placing particular emphasis on students taking pride in their appearance by ensuring shirts are tucked in and jackets are removed before entering the school building. These small details help create a positive learning environment and reflect the high standards we have for ourselves and our community. 

 

During form time this week, students will participate in a range of activities and assemblies designed to support their development. Monday's focus is on taking pride in our appearance through an SLT assembly delivered via Teams. On Tuesday, students will take part in Student Leadership Elections, providing an opportunity for them to contribute to the wider school community. Wednesday's form time will focus on numeracy skills, while Thursday's assembly will prepare students for Revision Week. On Friday, students will attend a House Assembly where they will learn about the launch of the House Art Competition and Litter Pick initiative. 

 

As a year group, we are focusing on several key priorities this term. Firstly, attendance and punctuality remain essential. Every day in school matters, and arriving on time helps students make the most of every learning opportunity. Secondly, we are encouraging all students to be positive and prepared by bringing the correct equipment and approaching each day with a readiness to learn. 

 

We are also placing a strong emphasis on integrity. We want students to make the right choices because they understand the importance of doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching. As the Year 8 students are role models for younger pupils, we expect them to demonstrate excellent manners, respect for others and a calm, sensible approach to school life. Finally, we are encouraging every student to develop Grade 1 Scholarly Habits by consistently showing excellent attitudes to learning in every lesson. 

 

Attendance across Year 8 is currently averaging 93.2%, which provides a strong foundation for the year ahead. We will continue working with students and families to improve attendance further and ensure every child has the best possible opportunity to achieve their potential.  

 

Celebrating success remains a key part of our work in Year 8. Staff will continue nominating students who impress us through their effort, kindness, resilience, leadership and achievements. These students will receive recognition through our postcard home initiative, allowing us to share their successes with families and celebrate the many positive contributions being made by our students.

Year 9 – Mr Roper   

This week, Year 9 pupils have had a particularly busy and productive week, both in their lessons and during form time. 

 

Form time is an essential start to the school day and provides pupils with the opportunity to participate in a variety of well-planned and structured activities. This week, pupils have engaged in assemblies focusing on appearance and effective revision strategies, taken part in student leadership elections, completed numeracy activities and attended a launch assembly from their Head of House looking ahead to this year's exciting house competitions. 

 

These sessions are invaluable as they not only provide important information but also offer pupils a wide range of opportunities to get involved in school life, develop new skills and contribute to our school community. 

 

Attendance and punctuality across Year 9 continue to be very good and we would like to thank parents and carers for their ongoing support. We cannot overstate the importance of regular attendance and arriving on time each day. There is a clear link between attendance, academic progress and overall success in school. Being punctual ensures that pupils are prepared for the day ahead and able to make the most of every learning opportunity.

Year 10 – Ms Bradbury 

It has been another positive week for Year 10, and I have been delighted to see students continuing to demonstrate the high standards we have spoken about since the start of term. Across lessons, many students have maintained excellent scholarly habits by arriving prepared, engaging thoughtfully in their learning and showing a commitment to achieving their very best. These habits are the foundation of success in Key Stage 4, and it has been fantastic to see so many students striving to be true MEA Central Scholars each day. 

 

We have also seen a fantastic start to our enrichment programme, with students taking advantage of the wide range of opportunities available across the school. Enrichment plays an important role in developing new skills, building confidence and creating lasting memories, and I encourage all Year 10 students to continue making the most of these opportunities. As a reminder, students should sign up for enrichment activities through Arbor to secure their place in clubs for next week. There is something for everyone, and I would love to see even more Year 10 students getting involved. 

 

Finally, I would like to recognise the hard work and dedication of our prefect team. They have been excellent role models and have worked incredibly hard to support enrichment clubs and activities throughout the week. Their enthusiasm, leadership and willingness to contribute to the wider school community have not gone unnoticed, and they have played an important role in helping enrichment get off to such a successful start. I look forward to seeing both our prefects and the wider Year 10 cohort continue to make a positive impact in the weeks ahead.

Year 11 – Mr Blackburn  

 

Dear Parents and Carers, 

Year 11 have had another fantastic week and have been given some excellent opportunities to start thinking seriously about their next steps after MEA Central. We have been delighted to welcome representatives from Parrs Wood Sixth Form, Xaverian College and Connell College, who have all delivered informative assemblies to our students. 

 

One of the key messages shared throughout the week is that there is no "one size fits all" approach to post-16 education. Each college offers a different experience, curriculum and environment, allowing students to find the pathway that best suits their individual interests, aspirations and learning styles. 

 

Looking ahead, most college open days take place during October, often on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is essential that students and families begin researching these opportunities now. We would like every student in the year group to have registered for at least one open day by this time next week. Visiting colleges is a crucial part of the application process, helping students to experience the environment firsthand, speak to staff and students, and make informed decisions about their future. 

 

These visits will also be invaluable when students come to write their personal statements. Over the coming weeks, students will receive support through CAP lessons to help them develop strong personal statements and prepare for college applications. Having visited potential colleges will enable students to write with greater confidence and authenticity about their future plans. 

As always, our focus remains on students being positive, proactive and taking ownership of their future. The opportunities are there for all of our scholars, and we encourage every student to make the most of them.
