About MEA Central
Manchester Enterprise Academy Central is a thriving 11-16 mixed secondary serving South Manchester.
In September 2017, our school opened its doors to 210 year 7 students and in September 2018, admitted a further 210, expanding its cohort to 420 students. Currently, there are 840 students on roll with the last cohort to be admitted in September 2021, bringing MEA Central to a full school of 1050 students.
MEA Central is the Altius Trust’s second school with a vision of ‘A Fantastic Future for All’, and is guided by the values of Citizenship, Achievement and Participation. Responding to the significant shortfall of secondary places in Manchester, MEA Central is providing high-quality school places in the area and has quickly become a school of choice for the community with applications almost tripling in its first year.
The brand-new building has capacity for 1,050 pupils once full. Currently, studies are restricted to one part of the building, facilitating tighter oversight of the learning process while building a stronger sense of community amongst students. During breaks, students can access calm and quiet areas devoted to reading, as well as spaces designated for playing board games.
MEA Central offers a knowledge-rich curriculum, rooted by a rigorous focus on ‘core’ subjects: students focus on History, Geography, Science, Maths and English, whilst also dedicating time for foundation subjects such as Art, Music and Drama. In this vein, MEA Central has recently been selected as a national hub for teaching Mandarin.
Beyond the classroom, the school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities to students; a historical film and a gospel club being two notable examples. Students are expected to participate in at least two extra-curricular activities a week.
We have the highest expectations of behaviour, and our 'zen' corridors ensure students arrive at lessons ready to learn and everyone in the classroom is expected to actively participate. Leaders and teachers throughout the school are passionate about oracy and literacy – students are consistently urged to build on their responses and encouraged to articulate their reasoning. This ensures that children have a detailed understanding of their own comprehension; open questions are scrupulously interrogated within the classroom as teachers meticulously assess their students’ understanding of key concepts.
